Youth Declaration, an annual conference run by United Nations Youth and sponsored by Youthfund, took place in April this year. Over one hundred high school students from across New Zealand came together to create a document representing the views of young people on topics such as the environment and social development. The declaration is given to change makers such as MPs meaning the youth voice is heard and can influence policy. Throughout the four days, students debated controversial issues in small committees, plenaries and over cups of coffee during morning teas and lunchtimes. Not only did Youth Declaration provide a challenging and thought provoking platform for young people to step up and voice their opinions, it fostered strong friendships and networks and inspired everyone who took part!
